Demo Map

The Shards of Order demo takes place in one dungeon structured as a branching node map you can revisit — a core expression of its persistent RPG design. Unlike roguelite maps that reset each run, this layout retains cleared nodes, unlocked paths, and collected gear knowledge across attempts. This guide explains how to read the map, plan routes for nine encounters (including two bosses and one miniboss), and use backtracking to recover from knockouts or weak gear injections.

Pair with Demo Walkthrough for fight-by-fight pacing and Boss Guide before major gates. New players should start at Getting Started.

Map philosophy: persistence over reset

Shards of Order rejects procedural permadeath loops. When you clear a node:

  • Progress persists — no full dungeon wipe.
  • You may return to earlier nodes for gear swaps, safer fights, or missed pickups.
  • Knockouts and crippled heroes carry forward — revisit to stabilize before bosses.

This map behavior defines strategic routing. Speedrun paths exist for veterans who mastered Combat System free draws; safe paths exist for first clears collecting five armors and four amulets.

Node types (conceptual)

Demo maps typically mix:

Combat nodes — trash or elite fights among twelve enemy types.

Boss nodes — two demo bosses and one miniboss checkpoint.

Gear nodes — armor or amulet pickups injecting cards into shared deck (Items and Cards).

Rest or utility nodes — recovery or preparation between spikes.

Branch points — choose paths trading safety for time or missing optional gear.

Exact node names vary by build; mark your map on first run for wiki contributions via Wiki.

  1. Early combat — learn time counter on low-risk nodes.
  2. First gear branch — prioritize defensive or draw-smoothing injection over raw damage.
  3. Optional elite — take only if heroes are healthy and revive costs low.
  4. Mid gear — fill armor/amulet slots before miniboss.
  5. Miniboss node — skill check; retreat if double knockout (Boss Guide).
  6. Pre-boss revisit — backtrack to swap gear answering boss patterns.
  7. Boss sequence — two final encounters closing ~forty-five minute demo.

Adjust using Builds — Scholar parties may need extra ally-damage routes; Exile parties need arrow-safe paths.

Revisiting nodes: when and why

Revive cost spike: After knockouts, revive card costs increase. Revisit easier nodes only if game allows re-fighting for resources; otherwise use rest nodes and gear swaps to enter bosses cautiously.

Wrong injection: Swapped amulet that adds dead cards? Backtrack to previous gear node if accessible.

Knowledge runs: Second demo attempt with Deck Calculator planned deck — skip optional fights for speed.

Law foreshadowing: Some nodes may hint at God mischief or broken laws — context in Laws and Fracture.

No procedural seed means routes are authored — community will publish optimal paths post-launch on Tier List adjacent guides.

Map and combat interface

Selecting nodes uses map UI documented in Controls. Combat still uses time counter rules — movement one time, draws after three cards free, etc. Map time is not combat time; plan gear before entering boss countdown arenas.

Demo scope limits

One dungeon cannot showcase world-scale map systems full release may add — law restoration reshaping routes, Fracture affecting travel redraws, etc. Treat demo map as tutorial for persistence mindset.

Hero-specific routing notes

Soldier: Front-loaded paths with early armors maximize rage/strength stability.

Scholar: Routes with extra trash packs generate ally damage for three mana types before miniboss.

Exile: Avoid arrow-draining optional elites if boss phase two demands four slots full.
