Shards of Order Demo Build Guide
Party compositions, gear pairings, and shared-deck synergies for all three demo heroes.
Buildcraft in Shards of Order happens at the party level, not the solo hero level. Three demo characters — Soldier, Scholar, and Exile — share one deck, and gear injects cards into that pool. A “build” therefore means your hero trio emphasis, armor/amulet selections from five armors and four amulets, and card priorities within the forty-two base demo cards. This guide presents practical demo builds aligned with the Combat System time economy and links to Deckbuilding, Items and Cards, and the Deck Calculator.

Build fundamentals
Every viable demo build respects:
- Three-card free draw — include enough low-time plays to refill without paid time draws.
- Knockout recovery — crippled heroes and rising revive costs punish glass-cannon routing (Laws and Fracture previews worse post-demo).
- Shared sequencing — Scholar mana from ally damage and Exile four arrow slots require party coordination.
- Boss telegraphs — Boss Guide patterns dictate defensive injections.
Build A: Soldier-led stability (beginner)
Lead: Soldier — rage/strength frontline.
Support: Scholar for scaled finishers after Soldier sets up ally damage; Exile for ranged cleanup.
Gear priority: Armor injecting defensive or rage-building cards; amulet with draw-smooth or low-time enabler.
Play pattern: Soldier opens low-time rage builders → third card triggers free draw → Scholar converts generated mana types → Exile spends arrows on priority countdown targets.
Best for: First demo clear, Getting Started players, miniboss safety.
Weakness: Lower burst on second boss if Scholar mana not online — revisit gear per Demo Map.
Build B: Scholar engine (intermediate)
Lead: Scholar — three mana types from ally damage.
Support: Soldier deals consistent ally-triggered hits; Exile handles ranged phases.
Gear priority: Amulets adding ally damage or extra setup hits; armor with mitigation so Scholar survives long sequences.
Play pattern: Soldier + Exile cheap damage → Scholar charges mana types → free draw → Scholar finisher spending typed mana → repeat before boss countdowns spike.
Best for: Players who mastered time arithmetic and want higher skill ceiling.
Weakness: Fragile if trash fights end with empty mana types — include fallback low-time Soldier cards in shared pool.
Build C: Exile arrow control (advanced)
Lead: Exile — four arrow slots management.
Support: Soldier stabilizes front; Scholar provides burst windows when arrows exhausted.
Gear priority: Injections restoring arrows or adding low-time shots; armor for survival when slots empty.
Play pattern: Open with arrow spend on highest countdown threat → regenerate slots via injected cards → use Soldier/Scholar filler to reach three-card draw without wasting arrows on trash → conserve two slots minimum entering boss phase two.
Best for: Boss Guide second boss where ranged answers matter.
Weakness: Map routes with excessive elites drain arrows — plan Demo Map skips.
Hybrid party: flex demo clear
Run balanced trio without hard leader:
- Shared deck: 40% low-time setup, 30% damage, 20% defense/revive, 10% hero-specific payoffs.
- Gear: one defensive armor, one utility amulet, swap second amulet before bosses.
- Use Deck Calculator to verify draw thresholds.
Hybrid avoids over-committing to one hero’s fail state (empty arrows, zero scholar mana, rage stall).
Gear pairing matrix (demo scope)
| Build | Armor focus | Amulet focus |
|---|---|---|
| Soldier-led | Rage/defense | Draw enabler |
| Scholar engine | Mitigation | Ally damage setup |
| Exile control | Survival | Arrow regen |
| Hybrid | Balanced tank | Flexible utility |

Boss-specific build tweaks
Miniboss: Add defensive injection temporarily; prioritize countdown delay over DPS.
Boss 1: Soldier-led or Hybrid for learning patterns.
Boss 2: Exile control or Scholar burst after optimized revisit — expect higher tempo (Review guide notes difficulty spike).
What not to do
- Stack only high-time cards — you never reach free draws (Combat System).
- Ignore shared deck nature — injecting Exile-only synergy without party setup whiffs draws.
- Push bosses with two crippled heroes — backtrack; persistent RPG allows recovery.
- Assume roguelite snowball — no procedural busted relics; gear is authored.
Post-demo and full release
Demo builds use three heroes only. Full release (July 28, 2026, Steam PC) should expand roster and law-modified cards — track Release Date and Wiki. Fracture stacks will punish redraw-heavy builds; tighten lists now.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do builds use separate decks per hero?
No. All three heroes share one deck. Builds focus on party composition and gear injections.
What is the best beginner build in the demo?
Soldier-led stability with defensive armor and draw-smoothing amulet is the most forgiving first clear.
How does Scholar fit into party builds?
Scholar needs ally damage from Soldier or Exile to generate three mana types before spending finishers.
How many gear pieces can I use?
The demo has five armors and four amulets to mix across runs.
Can I respec a build mid-run?
Swap gear at map nodes to change injected cards. Revisit branches to recover from bad choices.
Where do I simulate card ratios?
Use the Deck Calculator tool with counts from the Items and Cards guide.
