Shards of Order Character Tier List

Role value for the fixed three-hero party—not solo carry scores.

Character Tier List

Shards of Order ships with a fixed party of three: Soldier, Scholar, and Exile share one deck and one timeline. A character tier list therefore ranks learning priority, fight impact, and forgiveness—not “who to bench,” because you always field all three. Rankings reflect the Steam demo meta approaching the July 28, 2026 PC launch from Fardust and Awaken Realms.

Read Characters for kit details, Combat System for time-counter rules, and Tier List hub for ranking criteria.

Important disclaimer

You cannot swap heroes like a gacha roster. Tiers answer:

  • Which role should a new player learn first?
  • Which hero defines boss checks?
  • Which kit punishes deck bloat most harshly?

Pair this page with Builds and the Deck Calculator when translating tiers into cuts.

Tier summary (demo era)

TierRoleSummary
SScholarMana engine defines legal turns; fight pace hinges on three-mana loops
ASoldierFrontline stability and rage tempo; most forgiving defensive reads
AExileHighest burst ceiling; demands setup and queue discipline

Scholar sits S tier for party impact, not because Scholar solo-clears content. Scholar converts ally damage—including planned Soldier chip—into spells that stop bosses from outrunning your queue. When Scholar stalls, Exile arrows lack marks and Soldier rage spenders lack support.

Soldier and Exile share A tier with different skill profiles: Soldier teaches survival; Exile teaches optimization.

S tier — Scholar

Why Scholar leads — The rule granting three mana when allies take damage links defense to offense across the entire shared deck. Scholar cards disproportionately control the time counter through stuns, barriers, and removal—tools that prevent Fracture spirals documented in Laws and Fracture.

Weaknesses — Overloaded spell bands clog draws for rage and arrows. Scholar mains must cut redundancy using Card tier list guidance.

Learn first if — You prefer planning turns and reading telegraphs over raw damage execution.

Profile: Scholar

A tier — Soldier

Strengths — Rage generation from guards and taunts creates readable tempo. Soldier stabilizes multi-enemy fights where Exile would mis-fire into wrong targets. Beginner-friendly and boss-relevant per Boss Guide.

Weaknesses — Over-blocking starves Scholar mana. Soldier-heavy decks without spenders feel strong until damage checks fail silently.

Learn first if — You are new to card RPGs or struggle with defensive sequencing.

Profile: Soldier

A tier — Exile

Strengths — Arrow finishers end phases before attrition triggers redraw penalties or risky revives. Top damage when Soldier and Scholar setup is correct.

Weaknesses — Low consistency when marks, armor breaks, or mana spikes are missing. More sensitive to shared-deck bloat than other roles.

Learn first if — You already understand deck math and queue timing from other card games.

Profile: Exile

Role learning order

Recommended progression for most players:

  1. Soldier — Learn guards, taunts, and time-counter basics without starving the party.
  2. Scholar — Layer mana planning and control onto Soldier fundamentals.
  3. Exile — Add burst execution once setup is reliable.

Veterans may invert steps two and three, but skipping Soldier fundamentals usually produces “random loss” stories that are actually queue errors.

Boss-specific shifts

Some encounters temporarily elevate one role:

  • Heavy telegraph bosses — Soldier rises; perfect blocks beat greedy arrow lines.
  • Armor stack bosses — Scholar rises; Exile finishers wait on strip tools.
  • Add swarm fights — Exile volley tools rise if your deck includes mid-tier arrows, not only finishers.

Detailed patterns: Boss Guide.

Patch sensitivity

Demo feedback reworked combat queue clarity and party-of-three flow (Demo Changes). Scholar control tools and Soldier guard timing were most affected in player reports. Revisit this list after launch patches on Updates.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I remove a character from the party?

No. Campaign fights always use Soldier, Scholar, and Exile together with one shared deck.

Why is Scholar S tier if Exile deals more damage?

Tiers measure party-wide impact and consistency. Scholar enables turns that make Exile damage possible at all.

Which character should beginners main?

Learn Soldier first for defense, then Scholar for mana—Exile last for execution.

Do tiers change after launch?

Expect shifts as new cards and relics arrive; follow Updates for balance notes.
